NFL NEWS UPDATE: Giants steal coach from NFC team

The New York Giants have been busy along their coaching staff. On Tuesday afternoon, they made some important moves official. The Giants announced the hirings of Executive Director of Player Performance Aaron Wellman and running backs coach Joel Thomas.

Thomas had been with the New Orleans Saints for the past 9 seasons as their RBs coach.

He’s played a key role in the careers of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. There’s a reason that he held that spot in New Orleans for nearly a decade. Now, he gets a fresh start in New York.

Before joining the Saints, Thomas was the running backs coach at the University of Arkansas from 2013-14. He spent the previous four seasons (2009-12) in the same position at the University of Washington. Thomas was also the running backs coach at Purdue (2000-01 and 2006-08), Louisville (2002-03) and Idaho (2004-05).

Wellman returns to New York for another stint. The 49-year-old was with Giants from 2016-2019. He left to join Indiana University as senior AD for athletic performance.

Both are expected to be key contributors for the Giants offensive staff going forward.
