Alasdair Gold says Tottenham still really like £17m attacker despite signing Timo Werner

Alasdair Gold claims Tottenham Hotspur still admire Juventus winger Samuel Iling-Junior, despite the recent signing of Timo Werner.

The Football.London journalist has shared an update on Tottenham’s plans for the January window and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of signing another attacking player.

Spurs snapped up Timo Werner on a six-month loan deal last week, with the German forward making the switch back to England from RB Leipzig.

The 27-year-old made his debut at Old Trafford on Sunday and provided an assist in the 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Tottenham are widely expected to shift their focus to signing a new midfielder for Ange Postecoglou after bolstering their midfield and attack with the additions of Werner and Radu Dragusin.

But after breaking the news that Spurs are keen on Norwich City’s Jonathan Rowe yesterday, Gold claims Postecoglou’s men are still interested in Samuel Iling-Junior.

Tottenham still like Iling-Junior despite Werner signing

The journalist said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Spurs complete a move for a talented youngster and send them back on loan, much like they did with Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr in recent years.

“Again, if Spurs were to make a move [for Rowe] maybe that’s the kind of one where you say you keep him for the rest of the season and continue to develop him and we’ll kind of have him next summer,” Gold said.

“But that’s the type of deal, I wouldn’t be stunned if we see at least one of those happen in these remaining weeks, a player set up maybe more so for next season.

“If they can get them in now, terrific, but I don’t think they’d be against getting a young player.

“You know, Samuel Iling-Junior, another player at Juventus they like. Another versatile winger doing good things in Italy.”

Iling-Junior was struggling for minutes at Juve during the first half of the season. The 20-year-old had made just four appearances before the start of December.

But he’s getting more of an opportunity in Turin now, having made five appearances from the bench since. The former Chelsea youngster netted in his most recent outing at Salernitana.

He’s reportedly valued at around £17 million by Juve and has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs.

It would be a surprise to see Spurs move for another forward after signing Werner, especially with Manor Solomon closing in on a return and Heung-Min Son set to return from the Asian Cup next month.

Nevertheless, snapping up a young player and sending them back out on loan has worked well for Tottenham in recent years, with Udogie and Sarr becoming key players under Postecoglou this term.
