Changes to the Chicago Bears coaching staff have been announced to start on Wednesday after reports revealed offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has been relieved of his duties. After serving as the quarterbacks coach with the Green Bay Packers, he came to Chicago to work with quarterback Justin Fields and take the Bears offense to heights never seen in franchise history. After two seasons with nothing new, he has been fired and the Bears are moving forward.
It is still unclear what the Bears intend to do moving forward with the offense, especially the quarterback position. But it’s obvious that much needs to change if they intend on getting better and competing for championships in the future.
The Bears are the charter franchise in the NFL. In their storied history, they are credited for creating the act of the forward pass in football, revolutionizing and changing the game for generations to come. Yet, though being the creators of the modern quarterback position, they are the only franchise in the NFL to never have a quarterback throw for over 4,000 yards.
The only way to get rid of that embarrassing statistic is to change and meet the evolution of the game where it is today. Getsy was an obvious starting point to the changes to move forward, but far from the last move to make. Other contributors on the offense held back what the Bears could have been capable of for success in 2023-24. Here are 3 Bears that should be following him out the door before next season begins.
Darnell Mooney in Chicago Didn’t Work Out as Planned
Hopes were so high, especially this past year, for wide receiver Darnell Mooney to have his breakout moment. We never were sure when we’d see it, but we knew the potential was there. In 2023-24, especially with pairing with star receiver DJ Moore, it was believed we would see more vertical action for Mooney to make his numbers explode. There were talks of historic numbers for Mooney and the Bears offense. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
Mooney was drafted by the Bears in the 5th round of the 2020 NFL Draft. After posting a 1,000-yard season in 2021 and with the emergence of Justin Fields as the quarterback of the future, all of Chicago was ready to see this connection bloom into possibly the most explosive tandem in Bears history. But after two straight years under 500 yards for Mooney, it seems like it just isn’t going to work out that way.
It’s possible Mooney might be able to make something happen as a slot/No. 3 receiver somewhere in the league, but Chicago may not be the place for him. Expectations were unfairly high, as big markets do. We’re left to wonder what might have been, especially had he caught this Hail Mary.
