Tottenham Hotspur are poised to complete the signing striker Timo Werner – some nine years since first targeting the RB Leipzig man.
Tottenham are looking to do their January business early and are looking to wrap up two signings quickly.
We understand that Tottenham are still confident of signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin despite interest from Bayern Munich.
That deal still needs some work but Tottenham are seemingly nearing the signing of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
Sources tell HITC Football that Werner has undergone a medical ahead of a loan move to North London.
Tottenham can turn the move permanent for around £15.5million if Werner impresses, with the German finally set to join Spurs once and for all…
Tottenham Hotspur wanted Timo Werner nine years ago
Cast your minds back to 2015 and Tottenham were in the market for another striker to bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Spurs had focused their efforts on signing Saido Berahino from West Bromwich Albion but were struggling to meet the asking price.
Berahino never quite lived up to the hype, so this may actually be a case of Tottenham fans thanking Daniel Levy for not coughing up the cash.
Tottenham did have other irons in the fire though and The Telegraph reported that Spurs were opening talks to sign Werner from Stuttgart.
An £8million price tag was suggested back then but Tottenham ended up signing two other forwards – Son Heung-min from Bayer Leverkusen and Clinton Njie from Lyon.
You don’t need me to tell you that those two deals worked out very, very differently.
So what became of Werner after a move to Tottenham failed to materialise?
Werner stayed with Stuttgart for one more yet, hitting seven goals in the 2015-16 campaign before heading to RB Leipzig.
This was the start of a stunning spell for Werner, hitting 21 league goals in his first season at the club as part of a period of 78 goals in 127 Bundesliga games.
Werner’s form with RB Leipzig was astonishing and Chelsea swooped in 2020, only to find that Werner couldn’t quite replicate that form in the Premier League.
RB Leipzig were happy to take Werner back just two years after selling him but he has slipped down the pecking order this season.
So here we are, Tottenham are finally about to sign Werner nearly nine years since first targeting talks to land him.
Tottenham wanted a young and exciting Werner back then, but are now landing a Werner looking to prove himself all over again and ultimately rediscover his form.
It has taken a while but Werner will finally be in a Tottenham shirt after all – and Spurs fans will hope that he is worth the wait.
