Bears Have Reportedly Made A Decision On Matt Eberflus
With the end of the 2023 season approaching, the 2024 offseason will be a crucial one for the Chicago Bears.
Not only will they have to decide who to draft with the No. 1 overall pick, but the Bears will also have a decision to make regarding the future of quarterback Justin Fields and head coach Matt Eberflus.
The Fields decision may take a bit longer as the team waits on offers for the No. 1 pick, but CBS Sports’ NFL analyst Jonathan Jones reported Sunday that the Bears are “trending toward keeping Matt Eberflus another year.”
It’s unclear if keeping Eberflus would also indicate a return for Fields as well, but it would certainly be a surprise given how the Bears have looked during Eberflus’s tenure.
There should be a lot of good head coaching candidates this offseason as well, from Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to Michigan University head coach Jim Harbaugh.
So if the Bears choose to trade Fields away and draft a new quarterback, perhaps they’d also want to bring in a different head coach for a brand new staff.
Another option for Chicago is to bring in a new offensive staff – either for Fields or another quarterback – if they decide to keep Eberflus.
Current offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has coached better this year – as evidenced by Fields’ improved stats – but the team as a whole hasn’t taken as big a leap forward as some would like.
In any event, it appears as though the situations revolving around Eberflus and Fields are not directly connected, which creates an intriguing situation in Chicago.
