CBS Sports’ Dean Straka was dismissive of Colorado football when discussing Belleville quarterback’s Bryce Underwood’s recruiting sweepstakes before he ultimately landed on LSU; with the writer making it sound as if CU didn’t belong in the conversation to begin with via the use of a well-timed “even.”
“To no surprise, Underwood has been heavily pursued during his recruitment,” Straka prefaced before saying, “He’s received at least 41 known offers, according to 247Sports, including the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas and even Colorado. Underwood took three unofficial visits to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the last year — most recently in October — before pledging to LSU.”
“Even” Colorado. As if they don’t belong in the conversation with some of the most accomplished programs in history.
Well, to be fair, CU certainly doesn’t to most. A 4-8 record and being a year removed from a historic transfer portal exodus will always draw out that qualifier. But Coach Prime has been able to reel in three 5-star recruits the past three cycles from high school, and has top-two transfer class ranking finishes in his two years in Boulder.
What led Colorado football target Bryce Underwood to LSU
When discussing why he spurned Deion Sanders and Co. to join Brian Kelly’s Bayou Bengals, Underwood touted the past, aka LSU’s long and storied history before and after he was born, and the present, aka Kelly’s staff and the university’s world-class facilities.
“Great coaching staff, amazing coaching staff, amazing atmosphere,” Underwood told 247Sports. “The program itself is very historical. A lot of great players went in and out of Louisiana State University.”
It’s not the hardest decision to justify joining the program that just produced the Heisman at your position. Perhaps Underwood could rethink this decision in a year, and perhaps Colorado will be the program touting a Heisman quarterback.
