Player sold by City to celtic for just £350,000 is now valued at £70m

Manchester City sold Jeremie Frimpong to Celtic back in 2019 – and few would have foreseen his rise in European football.

The Dutchman has developed into one of Europe’s outstanding wing-backs since leaving the City Football Academy, and his current value will surely make Txiki Begiristain’s eyes water.

So, what is the latest on Jeremie Frimpong for Manchester City fans to digest? Let’s take a look…

Frimpong now among Europe’s most valuable footballers

Well, Manchester City received just £350,000 from Celtic back in September 2019.

Now – according to the CIES Football Observatory – Frimpong is worth a whopping €80.6m (£69.5m) after rising to stardom with Bayer Leverkusen.

The Netherlands international impressed at Celtic, but ever since Xabi Alonso arrived at Bayer Leverkusen, the Amsterdam-born defender has reached new heights.

In just 22 appearances so far this season, Frimpong has remarkably scored seven goals – while also providing ten assists – to help Bayer Leverkusen sit top of the Bundesliga.

It means the 23-year-old is now worth over 231 times what Manchester City sold him for.

Frimpong open to Manchester City return

Interestingly, Frimpong has actually admitted he would like to make a return to the Etihad Stadium one day.

The Bayer Leverkusen No.30 told Marca: “It would be great, but I don’t know. They have just won the Champions League and are the best team in the world. In the future, we will see.”

Pep Guardiola is obviously more than content with his right-back department as Kyle Walker, arguably the best in the business in that position right now, continues to start on a weekly basis.

However, the England international turns 34 in May, so Begiristain would be wise to start searching for his successor

Surely – after 17 goal involvements in 22 games this season – Frimpong is on the Spaniard’s radar as a potential heir to Walker’s throne.
