After ‘bad’ year, Yankees starter’s dream comes true

After a 2023 campaign he described as “bad” across the board, New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes’ year is ending on a high note — and he called on some past and present teammates to celebrate the moment.

On Saturday, Cortes got married to Alondra G. Esteras Russy, whom he met at a restaurant in Miami in 2015.

music artist El Chulo showed Cortes giving the peace sign surrounded by current and former teammates having a good time: Josh Donaldson, Luis Severino, Aroldis Chapman, Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton, Gio Urshela and Gleyber Torres.

Torres also shared a photo on his Instagram Story with him around a table next to Chapman, Urshela and Severino.

Cortes got engaged in July 2022 during All-Star Weekend. He posted on Instagram, “All Star week made 2 of my dreams come true. Pitch in a all star game. And propose to my bestfriend.”

The left-hander told NJ Advance Media’s Randy Miller at the end of the season he would be getting married in Miami and Puerto Rico, where he will honeymoon, but the celebration won’t last long because he needs to put the work in for a bounce-back 2024. This past season, he was ineffective (4.97 ERA) and often injured, contributing to only pitching 63 1/3 innings.

“We were going to go to Puerto Rico for a month, but I’m going to cut it to a week so I can get back to Miami and focus on my offseason training. I can’t afford to take a month and not do anything,” Cortes said.
