Leeds United interested in sealing transfer reunion

Leeds United are said to be one of two Championship clubs interested in signing Spezia goalkeeper Bartomej Dragowski this month.

The Whites have a couple of areas in the squad right now that look like they need added depth before the January window shuts, as injuries provide selection headaches for Daniel Farke.

A surprise lack of options in goal emerged at the start of 2024 when Kristoffer Klaesson was named in goal against Birmingham City, with Illan Meslier suspended and Karl Darlow injured with a dislocated thumb.

A report from Il Secolo XIX (via TuttoMercatoWeb) is now claiming that Leeds are keeping tabs on Spezia goalkeeper Bartomej Dragowski this month.

The Italian side currently play in Serie B alongside local rivals Sampdoria, owned by Andrea Radrizzani after leaving Elland Road.

Hull City are also named in the report, with the Polish ‘keeper likely subject to interest in the coming weeks.

Ethan Ampadu reunion mooted at Elland Road

An intriguing detail of this is that Spezia was Ethan Ampadu’s last loan club away from Chelsea before he made the permanent move to LS11 in the summer window of this season.

The Wales international suffered his third relegation on the spin out on loan from Stamford Bridge, forced to play in a less comfortable centre-back role – Leeds learned very quickly that his best form is in midfield.

Spezia were relegated agonisingly by goal difference last season, finishing level on points with 17th placed Hellas Verona, but three goals worse off.

What signing is most important in January?

When everyone is fit, there is absolutely no point even entertaining interest in goalkeepers across Europe, unless they are a massive improvement on what we have.

Dragowski doesn’t look like a marked improvement on what we currently have, to the point where we need to prioritise him.

Darlow and Meslier being out is annoying, but Klaesson showed he can hold his own with distribution and occasional shot-stopping too.
