It’s not common that a team can add a starting caliber player this late in the season.But that is exactly what the San Francisco 49ers did this past week when they signed defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day. He was able to make his debut for the 49ers against the Commanders, which Kyle Shanahan assessed on Monday during his conference call. Here is what he thought of Joseph-Day’s performance.
“It was good to get him out there. We definitely liked the guy and liked the player. We’re asking him to do some totally different stuff. The style that he’s played with two gaps and his stances and stuff are just kind of the opposite of what we do.
“To get him really a half practice where he just got to work on a couple things full-speed for two periods, then for him to go out there and play those 11 plays, I was real impressed with him. He was ready to go, did everything we asked. I bet you he will get a little bit more playing time than that next week.”
Joseph-Day should end up seeing a lot of work in the season finale against the Rams. The 49ers likely aren’t going to play their starters for the entirety of the game, so it gives Joseph-Day the prime opportunity to get more accustomed to his new team. His addition comes at a time where the 49ers have some blurriness with the future of Arik Armstead.
In case Armstead comes back on a limited basis, Joseph-Day can fill the rest of those reps with some quality.
