Villa linked with Serie A duo as League Two club eye keeper

The latest transfer speculation from Aston Villa as the January transfer window prepares to open.

Aston Villa are reportedly one of several Premier League clubs considering a move for Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson.

The 35-times capped Iceland international has hit a rich vein of form for the Serie A club this season by scoring nine goals and providing three assists in 18 games in all competitions and that has brought him to the attention of a number of potential suitors.

The 26-year-old recently penned a contract extension committing him to Genoa until the summer of 2027 – but Italian outlet TuttoSport have claimed that has not stopped Villa, Brentford and Crystal Palace from considering a move for his services. The report also claims Gudmundsson is not the only Genoa player that has caught Villa’s eye after Unai Emery reportedly showed an interest in Danish midfielder Martin Frendrup.

Villa youngster linked with League Two reunion

Goalkeeper Filip Marschall has already made his first major breakthrough at Villa Park after making his senior debut in the 1-1 draw at Europa League group stage rivals Zrinjski Mostar earlier this month. The England Under-19 international has also been an unused substitute in nine Premier League games, seven Europa League fixtures and the Carabao Cup defeat against Everton.

The 20-year-old is highly-rated within the Villa Park hierarchy and has also drawn glances from a League Two club with a management team he knows well. MK Dons manager Mike Williamson is said to be keen on securing Marschall on loan during the January transfer window after working with the goalkeeper during similar spells at non-league club Gateshead.

The Villa youngster helped the Tynesiders claim the National League North title in May 2022 and spent the second half of last season at the International Stadium as the North East outfit secured a mid-table finish in their first year back in non-league’s top tier.

Journalist Alan Nixon has taken to his Patreon account to claim MK Dons want to take Marschall on loan for the remainder of the season – although any deal could be held up by an injury suffered by Robin Olsen earlier this month.
