Newcastle United are currently leading the charge to sign Joachim Andersen, but may have to be prepared to make the Crystal Palace centre-back one of the most expensive signings in their history.
The January transfer window is looking particularly vital for the Magpies. Eddie Howe’s squad has been decimated by injury this season. Meanwhile, they will also be without Sandro Tonali for the rest of the campaign.
They have a mountain to climb if they hope to make it back into the Champions League next season. So they may look to be particularly busy over the coming weeks as they look to strengthen their options.
Newcastle lead race for Joachim Andersen
And one of the players on their radar, according to the Sunday Mirror (31/12; page 73), is Joachim Andersen.
In fact, the Mirror reports that Newcastle lead the list of clubs targeting the Denmark international.
However, Crystal Palace want around £60 million for the 27-year-old, who has formed an excellent partnership with Marc Guehi since his move to Selhurst Park. That would make him Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever, according to 90min.
Magpies surely unlikely to make £60 million bid in January
Andersen has been ‘outstanding‘ during his time in the Premier League. He was one of the best players during his loan spell at Fulham. And there were probably a number of teams kicking themselves that they did not secure his signature before his move to Palace.
He is known for those superb long-range passes. According to FBRef, only six Premier League players have completed more long-range passes this season than Andersen.
Remarkably, the only two outfield players to have completed more are Rodri and Trent Alexander-Arnold. So he is in amazing company.
Newcastle have hardly splashed the cash since the new owners came in. So it would be a shock if they made a £60 million bid for Andersen in the coming weeks.
But perhaps it should not be a surprise if Newcastle do see if a compromise could be possible.
