The Boston Red Sox need to make a few additions to the starting rotation this offseason.This has been extremely clear since the offseason kicked off. Boston made some positive strides last season but finished with just 78 games for the second straight season thanks in large part to a struggling rotation.
Boston dealt with injuries and inconsistent play in the rotation. The Red Sox’s starters failed to go deep into games often and it led to an overuse of the bullpen as well. Boston has money to spend but it’s unclear if it actually will use it this offseason for a frontline starter.
While this is the case, there are some intriguing hurlers with upside who the Red Sox could land with cheap contracts. One player who could make sense for Boston is former New York Yankees fireballer Frankie Montas.
The 30-year-old missed the entire 2023 season except for one game and likely will land a one-year, prove-it contract this offseason in free agency. When he has been healthy, he has been efficient. In eight big league seasons, Montas has logged a career 3.90 ERA.
Boston needs top-of-the-rotation talent but also could use a No. 3 or No. 4 hurler to help stabilize the rotation. Montas could be that type of guy if the Red Sox decided to make a move.
The free agent starting pitching market has been extremely slow this offseason so there still are plenty of options available. It’s unclear exactly what Boston will do. It was linked to former Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but aside from that there just has been chatter and speculation.
There are other options out there but maybe the Red Sox could look into landing someone like the former Yankees fireballer.
