Justin Fields is laser focused as the season comes to an end for the Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is focused on finishing the season strong, despite Chicago looking outside in on a potential spot in the postseason.
Just two games remain in the 2023 regular season for the Chicago Bears and before an offseason of questions begins, quarterback Justin Fields and the offense know that there’s work to be done.
Having won four of the last six games, what people inside Halas Hall label as “progress” being made, for Fields, he still sees a situation where the offense can continue to improve.
And the third-year quarterback, who’s had his fair share of critics throughout his time in Chicago, shed some light on his own expectations for the offense.
“We go into every game with the goal to score 28 points,” said Fields. “We try to put up at least 28 points a game. That usually gets it done for our defense.”
For the franchise, the last eight weeks have revealed something about the state of the roster: The pieces to compete exist but there is still a lot to clean up. While some of what needs to be cleaned up starts and ends with Fields, the last five games has seen the former Ohio State product go 96-0f-160 with 945 passing yards, four touchdowns, three interceptions while completing 60.0% of his passes.
And while some will consider those lackluster results, at the Bears facility, there is still evidence that the front office and coaching staff appear to believe that Fields can be “the guy” in Chicago.
“I talked to him in a general sense and just in terms of the position, of being an NFL quarterback,” said Eberflus. “You’re always going to get that. So you got to keep your eyes forward and your feet where they are. That’s the most important thing. You got to focus on the here and now and improving every single day. When you do that, you’re going to get better and you’re going to be able to stay locked in on your job. He does that at a great rate every single week. I commend him for that. You got to be strong to do that, certainly during times of adversity. He stands on solid ground. He stands on his work ethic and the man that he is. He does that. He keeps his eyes forward and his feet where they are supposed to be.”
When the Bears take the field in week 17 at home against the Atlanta Falcons, the microscope will be on Fields. He’s shown proof of completing some big time throws this season, connecting with wide receiver DJ Moore and tight end Cole Kmet. And he’s been the reason the Bears offense has suddenly come to life, especially after struggling in earlier portions of the season.
“Just cleaning up those details and focusing on sustaining that hot start throughout the whole game,” said Fields. “Like I’ve always said, I can always improve in areas. I’m not perfect at anything. To be honest, I have a lot of work to do. That work’s gonna be put in. It’s gonna be done. I’m excited for this Sunday, this matchup we have against Atlanta, going against a talented defense. Everybody’s getting ready for it, so it’ll be fun.”
Fields and the Bears will face a very similar team on Sunday afternoon that’s looking to sneak into the playoffs, and for everyone watching, the hope is that Fields puts together a strong showing to put the Bears over the top and one step closer to .500.
