Coventry await red card appeal decision ahead of Swansea

Coventry City loan defender Luis Binks

Coventry City are looking to string three straight Championship wins together for the first time this term when they take on a wounded Swansea at the CBS Arena on Friday night. The South Wales side travel to the West Midlands on the back of a 5-0 Boxing Day drubbing at Southampton, while the Sky Blues are in fine fettle following the festive victories over Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday.

The biggest question affecting Mark Robins’ team selection is the availability of Liam Kitching after the centre-half was sent off with a straight red card for violent conduct minutes after the final whistle on Tuesday afternoon, following a clash with Owls’ defender Bambo Diaby. City immediately complained to the referee, Oliver Langford, and lodged an appeal to overturn the decision, with Robins insisting his player’s innocence.

If successful, the manager will almost certainly stick with the settled back four that has served him so well over the last eight games. However, failure would result in at least one forced change against the Swans, with Luis Binks, Joel Latibeaudiere and Kyle McFadzean available to fill in the left-sided central defensive berth. Given that Latibeaudiere performed so impressively against Sheffield Wednesday while deputising for the injured Ben Sheaf – who remains a doubt – it’s likely that he will be required to continue in the specialised holding midfield role.
