Tottenham are now getting close to signing £30m defender

Tottenham Hotspur may already be closing in on the signing of a central defender for Ange Postecoglou ahead of the January window.

Since he arrived in the summer, Postecoglou has launched a complete rebrand of Tottenham.

Gone are the days of Antonio Conte’s slow, reserved football, and in place, Spurs now have an exciting philosophy showing huge promise for the future.

However, to reach that potential Tottenham will need to invest.

Despite making some in-roads in the summer, Postecoglou doesn’t have a squad entirely capable of executing his message.

A fresh injury to Cristian Romero has highlighted Tottenham’s almost non-negotiable need for a centre-back in January – and there could be good news.

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta, Spurs are now closing in on the signing of 21-year-old Radu Dragusin.

By now that should be a name familiar with Tottenham fans given how often he’s been linked with the club.

But via this report, Spurs are now getting close to securing a signing for around £30m after trumping interest from Barcelona.

Dragusin has a growing reputation, a player already forging his international career with Romania.

And he could be a huge boost if he arrives early on in January.

Tottenham close to signing central defender Radu Dragusin as January window approaches

Given the recent injury to Cristian Romero, it now seems as if Tottenham will once again field a team under Postecoglou without a recognised central defender against Brighton Hove Albion.

Eric Dier could be an option to partner Ben Davies, however, Emerson Royal’s ball-playing ability will probably be preferred.

Spurs’ back line will probably look similar to the side that earned a dramatic late draw against Manchester City at the start of the month.

And although Spurs’ excellent attack may be able to pave over the cracks once again tomorrow, this doesn’t bode well for their top four chances.

Therefore, the arrival of a central defender in January does almost need to be immediate for Tottenham.

Micky van de Ven should return next month, perhaps to partner Dragusin, but Romero’s injury has really hastened the situation.

And although a deal may be agreeable for Dragusin, Tottenham remain £10m short in another January pursuit.
