‘Go and get him’… Jamie O’Hara tells Newcastle

TalkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara has urged Newcastle United to make one big signing in January after suffering six defeats in the last seven games.

Newcastle have shown interest in bringing in former Manchester United man David de Gea on a free transfer, but no official offer has been made just yet.

On talkSPORT, O’Hara suggested that the Spaniard will be very keen to get back to playing in the Premier League and that Newcastle should be signing him in January.

De Gea could help to solve Newcastle’s poor form

Newcastle have been on a terrible stretch over the last month, barring a couple of big results, which has seen them slip down the table and out of Champions League contention.

There have been a number of problems that have emerged on the pitch like the fatigue and the poor finishing, but the goalkeeping has also been an issue since the injury to Nick Pope.

Martin Dubravka has stepped in to replace the England international but has looked off the pace since making his return to the team against Everton where he shipped three goals.

De Gea may not be everybody’s preferred option, but the 33-year-old certainly comes with experience of fighting at the top of the table and can still offer a lot after winning the golden glove last season.

On talkSPORT, O’Hara said: “I’d go and get David De Gea. Of course he wants to play, he’ll play for Newcastle.”

Dean Saunders then added: “Does he want to play? If you want to play football, you don’t go six months without playing.”

Newcastle need to be busy in January

While the squad may be capable of more when fully fit, Newcastle cannot rely on keeping everyone healthy in the second half of the season and should have learned their lesson from this summer.

It’s obvious that Newcastle need reinforcements in January, but it’s not entirely clear what there is to spend at the minute with a lot of the current rumours either free transfers or loan deals.

De Gea would not cost the club a penny in transfer fees so would be a good pick up for FFP restrictions, though his high wages may cause some issues amongst other players in the team.

At some point, though, the club have to push the boundaries or risk continuing this big dip in form that has been so difficult in the last few weeks.
