Alfie May’s Telling Admission And One ‘Disappointment’ After Ending Birmingham City Drought
Alfie May ended his 16-game wait for a goal in Birmingham City’s 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town
No striker has been more prolific in League One than Alfie May in recent years, but Birmingham City’s number nine has admitted to suffering from a confidence crisis before ending his lengthy goal drought in the 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town.
May stepped off the bench to score twice against League One’s basement side on Saturday as Blues exacted revenge against one of the teams to defeat them this season.
The striker had waited 16 games for a goal before prodding home from close range after Emil Hansson’s cross had taken Shrewsbury goalkeeper Jamal Blackman out of the equation.
Confidence suddenly flooded May’s body and the 31-year-old rounded Blackman to score a second within 10 minutes of his first. The striker now has 13 goals across all competitions this season, including 12 in the league.
May admitted: “I haven’t scored for however many games and I needed to reset myself and go back to doing the basics and being in the middle of the goal.
“I’ve probably not been as confident as I have been in the past, but this is football and you’ve got to get on with it.
“I’m delighted, it means the world. Hopefully I can kick on now and get some more.”
The greedy goal-getter in May wasn’t satisfied with a brace having had the chance to net his first Blues hat-trick late on.

“I’m delighted, it means the world. Hopefully I can kick on now and get some more.”
The greedy goal-getter in May wasn’t satisfied with a brace having had the chance to net his first Blues hat-trick late on.
In his interview with Blues TV, May added: “I wanted the third and I’m disappointed I didn’t score it. It’s one of the best feelings.”
May was mobbed by his teammates after scoring his first and Jay Stansfield raced over to him at the final whistle to congratulate him.
“The togetherness this group has is unbelievable, from the top to all the players and staff. That’s why we’ve probably been successful this season,” says May. “We all want everyone to succeed and that’s why we are where we are.”
