Originally a three-star recruit, Okoronkwo was ranked as the No. 1 prospect from Germany in the 2024 class and the No. 47 linebacker overall. He initially committed to Maryland before decommitting and choosing Alabama over offers from South Carolina, Michigan, and Penn State. His athletic background is diverse; he grew up playing soccer and participating in gymnastics before transitioning to American football approximately five years ago.
Okoronkwo’s decision to transfer comes after a season in which Alabama finished with a 9-4 record under first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer. The Crimson Tide’s linebacker corps is set to return key players, including Justin Jefferson and Deontae Lawson, and has added Nikhai Hill-Green from Colorado, potentially limiting Okoronkwo’s opportunities for increased playing time.
At South Carolina, Okoronkwo joins a program that also concluded the 2024 season with a 9-4 record. The Gamecocks are seeking to bolster their linebacker unit following the departures of starters Debo Williams and Demetrius Knight. Okoronkwo will compete for a starting position alongside other newcomers, including Florida State transfer Shawn Murphy.
Head coach Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks officially announced Okoronkwo’s signing on January 10, 2025. Okoronkwo expressed his enthusiasm for the move on social media, stating, “New Home!!!”
With three years of eligibility remaining, Okoronkwo’s addition is expected to provide both immediate impact and long-term benefits to South Carolina’s defense. His unique blend of size, speed, and international experience adds a dynamic element to the Gamecocks’ roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
