The Millers were more assured in the second half on Friday night and held on to a 1-1 draw against Daniel Farke’s promotion-chasing side
Rotherham United interim boss Wayne Carlisle has revealed the change he made at half-time to nullify Leeds United after the shape set by Daniel Farke caused ‘uncertainty’.
The Whites went ahead in the sixth minute through Crysencio Summerville and largely dominated the first half. The cushion of a second goal never came though, and the sides went into the break level after a late equaliser from Hakeem Odoffin.
Rotherham grew into the game in the second half, with Leeds struggling to find the same rhythm after the interval. After the match, Rotherham boss Carlisle was asked how the Millers were able to keep Farke’s men at bay in the second half.
“We tweaked something in the midfield,” he told Rotherham United’s club website. “We anticipated one thing in the first half which changed but we couldn’t get the message onto the pitch, so we got that done at half-time and I thought it changed the tide of the game.
“There were times where we were passive. We asked the players to be patient, but not passive. But that was partly due to the uncertainty in the middle of the pitch with what they had done with their shape, but once we sorted that in the second half it was much more like a Rotherham home performance.
“If you’d told us before the game that we’d get a point, I’d have taken it. On the scale of the second half, I’m a little bit disappointed we didn’t come away with a bit more to be honest.”
The point left Leeds seven points behind the leaders Leicester City and Ipswich Town, with both sides given the chance to extend their lead to double figures on Saturday.
