WASHINGTON − Congress Passes Bipartisan Bill to Prevent Government Shutdown
In a critical move to avoid a government shutdown just days before the winter holidays, Congress passed a bipartisan spending bill late Thursday evening. The measure ensures continued funding for federal agencies and averts furloughs for thousands of government employees who faced uncertainty during the festive season.
The legislation, which passed the Senate 68-32 following a 310-121 vote in the House, provides funding through the end of the fiscal year, offering stability to government operations. Both parties lauded the compromise, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing workers and public services over political gridlock.
“This bill reflects our ability to come together and deliver for the American people,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. “It’s a reminder that bipartisan solutions are possible when we focus on what matters most.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the inclusion of key conservative priorities while acknowledging the need to cooperate to ensure essential services continue.
The bill includes provisions for increased defense spending, funding for disaster relief, and extended child tax credits, among other measures. However, debates over long-term fiscal policies and social spending programs are expected to resume early next year.
Federal workers and their families, many of whom had been bracing for disruptions, welcomed the news as a relief during the holiday season.
