Recently, Metallica has faced multiple legal allegations and controversies, one of which involved a lawsuit they filed against their insurance company, Lloyd’s of London, regarding losses from canceled tours due to COVID-19. The band claimed a loss of $3.2 million after their 2020 South American tour was canceled. However, the insurance company refused coverage, citing a communicable disease exclusion in the policy. Metallica challenged this, but their lawsuit was ultimately dismissed in 2022 and again rejected on appeal in 2024.
In another significant controversy, Metallica was criticized for the use of their music in military torture practices. Their song “Enter Sandman” was reportedly used to break down prisoners at Guantánamo Bay. Though the band publicly joked about the situation, they later requested that the U.S. military stop using their music in such practices
