How Will Alves injury setback prevents first-team comeback

A fresh muscle injury has cruelly prevented Will Alves from returning to Leicester City’s senior squad for the first time in a year.

The talented teenage midfielder had been playing for the under-21s over recent weeks after making his comeback from a serious knee injury he suffered 12 months ago. But while issues of availability in the senior City squad opened the door for him to get onto Enzo Maresca’s bench, a muscle problem stopped him from featuring.

Alves played 90 minutes for the first time a week-and-a-half ago in City under-21s’ 3-1 loss to Wolves, but has not been seen since. Had he not picked up a fresh injury, Maresca admitted he probably would have included him, having previously said he has “something special”. That would have given him the opportunity to add to his two first-team outings so far, the last coming at MK Dons 12 months ago.

Wanya Marcal is also out for a few weeks with his own muscle injury, and so fellow development squad winger Tawanda Maswanhise has been on the bench over the past two games. City also had to include Danny Ward as a third-choice goalkeeper among their substitutes against Millwall on Wednesday with seven senior players absent.
