Jordan Chiles reportedly has no intention of returning bronze medal as Team USA plans to continue appeal
Jordan Chiles recently saw her bronze medal in the women’s floor exercise final at the Paris Olympics stripped after a ruling by the Court of Arbitration (CAS).
The decision resulted in the International Olympic Committee restoring the original podium, meaning Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu was restored to third place.
Despite the ruling, reports indicate Chiles has no intention of returning her bronze medal as Team USA continues its pursuit of an appeal.
Chiles initially finished fifth in the eight-woman final. However, Team USA coach Cecile Landi appealed the score in order to boost her score by 0.1 as she hadn’t been credited with a maneuver.
The appeal was granted, which moved Chiles on to the podium at the expense of Barbosu. However, Romania later protested the decision to CAS and argued that the appeal was made outside the one-minute time frame of when Chiles’ score was initially posted.
The appeal was successful, with Barbosu awarded her bronze medal last Friday.
USA Today’s Christine Brennan reports Chiles plans on keeping her medal despite Barbosu’s medal ceremony.
“Chiles is in the United States and still has possession of the bronze medal that was awarded to her in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics, two people with knowledge of the situation who did not want to be identified have told USA TODAY Sports,” her report states.
