Alex Morgan left off U.S. Olympics roster as Emma Hayes picks ‘another direction’
Eighteen players have been chosen by Emma Hayes to compete for the United States women’s national team at the summer Olympics in Paris.
Among them will not be Alex Morgan.
Hayes selected five forwards: Mallory Swanson, Crystal Dunn, Jaedyn Shaw, Crystal Dunn, and Sophia Smith. The veteran striker, who has participated in every major tournament for the national team since the 2011 World Cup, was left off the roster.
Shortly after the roster was made public on Wednesday, Hayes told reporters via Zoom, “First off, I want to talk about what an amazing player and human Alex Morgan has been.” “I’ve only had the chance to collaborate with her once, during the most recent camp, and I witnessed firsthand not just her attributes, but also her professionalism and track record, which are undeniable.

The 34-year-old Morgan has participated in three Olympics, won two World Cups, and scored 123 goals in his 224 caps. Morgan would have been the final member of the 2012 gold medal-winning squad if she had made it; the USWNT has not won a gold medal since. During player introductions at games, she consistently receives the greatest cheers and is the most recognizable member of the squad.
