Pundit is stunned that Nawrocki is not starting for Celtic this season

When Celtic fans watched their club spend big money this summer on Maik Nawrocki, they would have expected the Polish defender to be a first pick for Brendan Rodgers.

Unfortunately, the 22-year-old was injured early into this season and even though he is back to full fitness, Rodgers has explained why Nawrocki has yet to be seen in a Celtic jersey.

But that has still left Stephen McGinn stunned that Rodgers is playing Nat Phillips ahead of Nawrocki even through the on-loan defender is clearly miles off the pace in terms of fitness.

McGinn said [The Go Radio Football Show], “Celtic without Carter Vickers in the league, I don’t know what the stats are, but I mean there’s a dramatic drop-off.

“And what I can’t understand from yesterday is how a short-term loan in Nat Phillips, how can he be much better than Nawrocki.

“I’ve watched Legia Warsaw against Aston Villa and I thought they were an excellent side. Really held their own and beat Aston Villa in Poland, deservedly this season.

“But I’m thinking Nawrocki was a big part of that team last season, and I’m thinking a young player they spent a lot of money on how can Nat Phillips be the option other than Nawrocki”

I said on TBR Celtic yesterday that Phillips needs to be immediately dropped by Rodgers in favour of either Gustaf Lagerbielke or Nawrocki.

Unfortunately, the Polish defender is not available for the final Champions League match against Feyenoord but I would have no hesitation in throwing him in against Hearts this weekend.

After all, the £4.3m signing couldn’t do much worse than Phillips who looks to be on his way back to Liverpool when his short-term loan deal ends this month.

But with recent reports suggesting Nawricki could be loaned out in January, maybe the ship has sailed for him this season under Rodgers.
