Ipswich sign defender Townsend from West Brom

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Conor Townsend from West Bromwich Albion.

 

The 31-year-old is Ipswich’s sixth signing of the summer as he agrees to a two-year contract after spending six years with West Brom.

What did he have to say?

“The move came around quite quickly and I’m excited to get started. I have had good conversations with the Manager and everyone speaks very highly of him, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working under him,” Townsend told the club’s official website.

“I played against Ipswich twice last season and both were very tough games. What the team was able to achieve last season was special, so I’m excited to be a part of it now.”

Who is Conor Townsend?

Townsend was born in Hessle, north east England on 4 March 1993. He began his career with Hull City in 2011 but was loaned out every season until 2016 and never made a senior appearance for the club.

He then moved to Scunthorpe United in January 2016 and spent two-and-a-half seasons with them, twice reaching the playoffs in League One.

Following that was his move to West Brom in the summer of 2018 where he went on to play 213 times for the Baggies, which included 25 appearances in the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Ipswich’s 2024/25 transfer activity

Ipswich have been busy bolstering their squad ahead of their first top-flight season in 22 years, as Townsend becomes their sixth summer signing.

He follows Omari Hutchinson, Ben Johnson, Jacob Greaves, Liam Delap and Arijanet Muric.

Townsend will join his Ipswich team-mates in Germany on Thursday afternoon and could be in action in their next pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach on 2 August.

They begin their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on Saturday 17 August.
