Lewis Hamilton set to take part in South African Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton may soon get biggest F1 dream granted with key meeting scheduled

Lewis Hamilton’s hopes of taking part in a South African Grand Prix before the end of his career have been bolstered after the country’s sport, arts and culture minister confirmed that a meeting with F1 representatives is scheduled for August to discuss the future of the event.

The seven-time world champion has been hounding Stefano Domenicali and F1 to engage in talks over a return to the iconic Kyalami Circuit, which hosted the South African GP between 1967 and 1985 before the Apartheid regime saw the country stripped of its flagship motorsport event.

F1 returned to Kyalami in 1992, but after the next two renewals of the race were won by Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost, the chequered flag dropped on the South African GP in 1993 and triggered over three decades without a race on the African continent. Hamilton, however, is looking to change that.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 last November about his hopes for a restored South African GP, Hamilton explained: “There’s one more race we need and that’s going to be Africa. We have all the other continents and why not there? So that’s the one I’m working on pushing right now.”
