Update from Chiefs Training Camp: Rookies to Start Making an Impact Right Away in the Chase of…

Chiefs’ vets report to training camp, where rookies are already trying to make an impact

The Kansas City Chiefs are well aware of Patrick Mahomes’ capabilities as a two-time league MVP and the crucial role Travis Kelce plays in their offense.

Their defense, which was among the best in the NFL last season and remains largely unchanged since their recent Super Bowl victory, is also familiar to them.

However, as veterans began reporting to training camp at Missouri Western State University, the Chiefs face the reality that their quest for a record third consecutive Lombardi Trophy could depend on new players this season. Specifically, the rookies, who arrived a few days earlier than the veterans, are expected to step into important roles immediately.

“There’s no time to ease in,” Mahomes emphasized regarding the rookies’ readiness. “It’s all about performing from the get-go.”

General manager Brett Veach often emphasizes selecting “the best player available” in the NFL draft, and the Chiefs were fortunate this April to fill key positions with their picks. One standout is Xavier Worthy, a speedy wide receiver from Texas who set a record in the 40-yard dash but dealt with a hamstring injury during summer workouts. Despite this, Worthy is eager and prepared to contribute, aiming to utilize his speed to complement Mahomes’ passing game.

The Chiefs anticipate Worthy playing a significant role as their third wide receiver alongside Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown, although Rice faces legal issues that may impact his availability this season. The team is deeper at wide receiver than last year, but the backups lack the explosiveness of the starters.

Another area of focus for Kansas City is left tackle, where they seek a replacement for Donovan Smith. Second-round draft pick Kingsley Suamataia appears to be the frontrunner, with competition from Wanya Morris, who showed promise as a rookie.

While the Chiefs’ veteran core ensures few open spots, rookies like Jared Wiley at tight end, Jaden Hicks at safety, Hunter Nourzad on the offensive line, and Kamal Hadden at cornerback have opportunities to carve out roles before the season opener against Baltimore on Sept. 5.

“The veterans have been incredibly supportive since we rookies arrived,” noted Nourzad. “They’ve guided us not just in football matters but also in adjusting to Kansas City and involving us in community activities.”
