‘It is exciting’ – Callum Wilson on Sunderland vs Newcastle

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has admitted he “would love” to play in next month’s Tyne-Wear derby. Fans from both clubs were stunned at the weekend when the Magpies were drawn away to Sunderland.

Not since March 2016 has the rivalry been contested, with Newcastle last winning the fixture 12 years ago. The Black Cats’ recent plight down the divisions has paused the hostilities – but they are set to be resumed in the new year.

Wilson is currently sidelined, having missed Newcastle’s last four games in all competitions with a hamstring injury. The 31-year-old issued a positive injury update earlier this week, revealing he could be back in full training soon, and now has his sights on the Tyne-Wear derby.

“You are thinking, ‘This is what it means to the Magpies to beat Sunderland’. I would love to be involved in that game. As a striker, you have a final say in opportunities. Just to experience the atmosphere, the tension, to score a goal in there would be different.

“It would have been better if it was at St. James’ Park, of course, but even being there, having fewer fans and experiencing the hostile environment from them, it gives you goosebumps. We will turn up, give them a good game I’m sure and they will be licking their lips to try and cause an upset. I am not going to give any ammo for them to start using, but I am looking forward to it.”
