Leeds United centre-back Liam Cooper is currently out of contract and in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a free transfer.
The Whites are seven days out from their first pre-season fixture against Harrogate Town, and Daniel Farke might want more fresh faces through the doors.
After his third signing in Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth, Farke might have his eyes on continuing to boost the depth of his squad amid departures that could go on further.
Liam Cooper in talks with Blackburn Rovers, happy to take pay cut
Liam Cooper is a possible, if not quite likely departure from Elland Road this summer with his contract already expired at the end of June.
Leeds’ retained list confirmed talks over a new deal for the club captain, who has spent 10 years at the club, but radio silence on that front midway into July suggests a deal isn’t forthcoming.
Meanwhile, the Lancashire Telegraph share that Cooper is in fact in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a free transfer to Ewood Park.
Sheffield United are said to be interested in the defender too, as Cooper looks to prioritise playing time for next season, leaving a new deal at Leeds even less likely on that front.
Cooper is even willing to take a pay cut in order to secure his move this summer as John Eustace looks for a defensive recruitment to ensure Rovers have a season better than their narrow survival last time out.
Cooper is not going to play much at all next season if he stays at Leeds, and that means he should be looking to exit to another club in our league.
He’s still got more than enough in the tank to be a starter in a large portion of clubs in this league, but his legs aren’t up to the standard we need in a high-pressing, high line side under Farke.
A move to Blackburn would make a lot of sense for Cooper, defending his box and expected far less to be the progressive defender Pascal Struijk has set the bar as.
