Team’s Most Underrated Prospect
The Boston Bruins have a rich history of developing talented prospects into NHL stars.
While many fans are familiar with top prospects like Fabian Lysell and Johnny Beecher, there is one player who flies under the radar but has immense potential: Georgii Merkulov.
Merkulov, a 21-year-old Russian forward, was drafted by the Bruins in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Despite his late-round selection, Merkulov has impressed in the Bruins’ development camp and in the Russian junior league, showcasing his speed, skill, and scoring ability.
With 15 goals and 22 assists in 34 games for the Moscow Spartak junior team last season, Merkulov demonstrated his offensive prowess. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the Russian national team for the World Junior Championships.
Merkulov’s underrated status is largely due to his size (5’10”) and the fact that he plays in Russia, making it harder for North American scouts to evaluate him. However, his skillset and work ethic make him an intriguing prospect for the Bruins.
With the Bruins’ depth at forward, Merkulov may not be an immediate NHL contributor, but he has the potential to become a top-six forward in the future. Keep an eye on this talented young player, as he may soon become a household name in Boston.
