HE’S A BIG FAN; WEST HAM TO MAKE A BRILLIANT SIGNING

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has opened up on his admiration for James Ward-Prowse after the West Ham United midfielder scored the winner against their Premier League neighbours on Thursday night.

James Ward-Prowse proved across the capital, West Ham becoming the latest team to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead against Ange Postecoglou’s stuttering Spurs, that there is more to his game than set-pieces.

The £30 million summer signing was outstanding in the second half, even before his rather fortuitous winner on the 74th minute, Ward-Prowse converting after his initial effort had rebounded back off the post in the aftermath of Destiny Udogie’s dreadful back pass.

“West Ham have done well,” Redknapp, who coached both clubs during a storied managerial career, tells talkSPORT (8 December, 9am).

“I think they made some good signings in the summer. The recruitment has been good, especially Ward-Prowse. I am a big fan of his. I think he is a really solid, good player. He was a great player to bring in. The right type of person.

Ward-Prowse now has 13 goal contributions in a West Ham shirt, he and fellow midfielder Edson Alvarez helping the club move on from the departure of talisman Declan Rice. Alvarez was in superb form against Spurs too, while Jarrod Bowen moved into double figures to cancel out Cristian Romero’s early opener.

“Bowen has been brilliant in the second-half,” Alan Shearer, the Newcastle legend, told Amazon Prime (7 December, 8.30pm). “He’s been horrible to play against, in the nicest possible way, with his energy.

West Ham are now just three points behind early-season pacesetters Tottenham in the Premier League table.
