A passenger has been taken to hospital.

A driver has been killed after losing control of her car while travelling in northeast Victoria.

The woman and her female passenger were driving along Beechworth-Wangaratta Rd in Everton Upper about 2pm on Friday when the car left the road and smashed into a tree.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and began treatment on the pair.

“Unfortunately the driver died at the scene,” Victoria Police said.

Her passenger has been taken to hospital for treatment and police have not commented on her condition.

The incident is now under investigation and the “exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined”.

Authorities have appealed for information as they piece together exactly what happened.
