‘I happily broke it!’ – Lando Norris refuses to apologise after smashing Max Verstappen’s trophy

Lando Norris accidentally smashed Max Verstappen’s trophy on the Hungarian Grand Prix podium – but thankfully both drivers saw the funny side of things.

After passing polesitter Sir Lewis Hamilton at the start, Verstappen cruised home to win a record-breaking 12th race in a row for Red Bull.

The two-time champion came home over 33 seconds ahead of Norris who made use of a great strategy call to leapfrog teammate Oscar Piastri and record back-to-back podium finishes for the first time in his career.

It was a pretty uneventful race for both drivers, but chaos ensured afterward as Norris accidentally knocked over Verstappen’s trophy as he was dramatically popping his champagne.

The trophy, valued at around £35,000 and decorated in pink, reportedly in celebration of the newly-released Barbie movie, was smashed into several pieces.

As both the Brit and the Dutchman realised what had happened, their reaction was a hilarious mix of horror and laughter which carried on as the pair headed to the media pen for their post-race interviews.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Norris said: ‘I happily broke it! I was annoyed I was P2.

The incident prompted laughs up and down the grid, with Mercedes’ George Russell quipping: ‘You are kidding me! That’s surely got to be a 10-second penalty! That is awful, what was he thinking? He needs to go to Specsavers!’

Brown himself later pretended to smash Norris’ trophy as the McLaren team celebrated, with their Twitter account also posting: ‘We are so, so sorry’ accompanied by a video of the smash.
