FACTS: limbo after ‘lost season…..

Leander Dendoncker faces a pivotal summer at Aston Villa following an underwhelming loan spell at Napoli.

The defensive midfielder made just eight appearances for Villa last season for a total of 119 minutes and he did not fare better when he moved to Italy in January.

After joining the Serie A side, Dendoncker made just three appearances for a total of 21 minutes in a season that will have frustrated the Belgian.

He understandably missed out on Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad as a result of his lack of action and now he faces a crunch decision on what happens next.

Voetbalkrant have been talking about his future with his first-team chances at Villa looking extremely limited.

They report: “With the Villains already having five midfielders, including a certain Youri Tielemans, Leander Dendoncker will probably not be able to win a spot.

“Under contract until 2026, Dendoncker could be loaned out again. But after an almost lost season and a very understandable non-selection for the Euro 2024, the candidates are not coming forward in large numbers. Perhaps the end of the transfer window will save the day for someone who has 32 caps with the Red Devils.”

Dendoncker has made just 35 appearances for Villa since making the switch to the West Midlands from Wolves in September 2022.
