Update Emerges On Reported Wrexham Target
Wrexham have Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher on the books for the upcoming season, with the latter having only signed a new contract recently. The addition of Ironside would add a fifth striking option to Phil Parkinson’s side as he looks to plan for a season in the third tier.
However, reports linking Ironside to the Welsh side have been played down by the Doncaster Free Press. They have indicated that not only is the interest not accurate, but the club would be unwilling to sell the player, who has been a vital part of Grant McCann’s side this year, despite the addition of returning hero Billy Sharp.
The Sheffield-born forward moved to the club, partly to be closer to his home in South Yorkshire having spent a period away in Cambridgeshire and is unlikely to want to move away again after such a short period of time.
The Focal Point
Joe Ironside impressed for Doncaster last season, becoming the focal point for Grant McCann’s side as they narrowly missed out on promotion through the play-offs. He notched 24 goals in all competitions and contributed seven assists in 55 games for the club including a run of 6 goals in the final five games of the regular season. Ironside also scored assisted in the first leg of the play-off semi-final against Crewe Alexandra and scored in the penalty shootout despite his team ultimately losing.
The striker is a key part of this side with play very much focused on utilising his best assets. To lose him ahead of a big season, which the club will be hoping to push on and go one better would be a major blow, with the task of replacing him difficult, if not impossible.
