Chris Davies gives transfer update as Birmingham City target players for ‘two or three seasons
Birmingham City are trying to recruit players for ‘two or three seasons’ – not just make signings to get the club out of League One.
That is what Chris Davies said about the club’s recruitment strategy for the summer transfer window as he called for patience from supporters over the lack of signings. Goalkeeper Ryan Allsop is the only addition Blues have made to their squad during the close season.
Davies has been instructed to build ‘a Championship ready squad for League One’ by chief executive Garry Cook. Blues want to create a team that can win promotion and compete in the Championship straight away, as Ipswich Town did superbly under Kieran McKenna last season.
“There’s a lot of work going on identifying targets and assessing current players that we have based on observation and the data that we get provided,” said Davies. “There’s a lot of work going on and what’s important to me is I navigate that process with the right level of calm.
“We are being proactive and we are getting business done to bring players in to help us but at the same time we need to understand it’s going to take time to assemble the squad that’s going to be, not just a squad that stays with us for one season, but hopefully two or three. There’s a lot of work going on and a lot of good people here working hard behind-the-scenes and step by step we will get there and build a really good squad.”
Davies said of his first signing: “Ryan is a very good goalkeeper with his hands first and foremost and that’s his fundamental, but he’s exceptional with his feet – one of the best outside the Premier League. It does give an insight into how we’re going to play.
“We’re going to be very progressive with the ball and we’re going to try to build the game and dominate possession. For that, it’s critical that the goalkeeper is comfortable to execute those passes and understands how to play. Ryan is a good indication of the type of football we’re going to play, work on in pre-season, and hopefully the fans will see it on the pitch.”
