Former Derby County & West Brom Star Set For Birmingham City Switch

Former Derby County and West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ryan Allsop could become Birmingham City’s first signing of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Birmingham Live have revealed that the Hull City shot-stopper has garnered interest from the Blues following their relegation from the Championship last month. Despite being the Tigers’ number ‘1’ keeper under former boss Liam Rosenior, Allsop is set to leave the MKM Stadium this summer once his contract expires in less than a fortnight.

However, he won’t be without a club for long as Birmingham are set to make a move for the experienced goalkeeper. Birmingham Live are reporting that new head coach Chris Davies is looking for someone between the sticks who is comfortable with the ball at his feet and Allsop fits this description, having been described as a “footballing goalkeeper” by Wayne Rooney during his time at Derby County.

Having come through West Brom’s academy, Allsop failed to make a single competitive appearance for the Baggies but did have a fruitful career in the EFL, playing for clubs such as Lincoln City, Coventry City, Portsmouth, Derby, Wycombe Wanderers, Blackpool, Cardiff City and most recently, Hull.

Throughout his lengthy career, Allsop lifted the EFL Trophy with Lincoln back in 2018 while also earning promotion with Wycombe from League One to the Championship when former Queens Park Rangers boss Gareth Ainsworth was in charge in 2020. Birmingham City will be hoping that the Brummie will be able to pull off the same feat at St. Andrew’s.

Allsop seems to be getting better and better. At Derby County, he was an integral part of Rooney’s system when the current Plymouth Argyle manager was in charge, while Rosenior brought him to Hull, having been the assistant manager at Pride Park.

Nevertheless, now that Rosenior is gone, Allsop’s contract will not be renewed in Yorkshire, which will make him a free agent in less than two weeks. Birmingham are keen to bring him to the club as goalkeeper John Ruddy turns 38 in October and will need replacing quite soon.
