Ex Sky Blues Striker Is 64 Today: ‘Happy Birthday

Members News: Our Ex Sky Blues Striker Is 64 Today: ‘Happy Birthday’ Kevin!

CCFPA sends its best birthday wishes to its member, former Sky Blue striker, Kevin Drinkell. Born in Grimsby on 18th June 1960, Kevin is therefore celebrating his 64th birthday today!

Kevin first made his mark with home town club, Grimsby Town and between 1976-84 made 272 league appearances for the Mariners netting an impressive 89 times. He then had a three year spell (1985-88) at Norwich City scoring 50 league goals for the Canaries in 121 outings before moving north of the border to try his luck at Rangers.

Twelve goals in 36 league games convinced Sky Blues manager and much missed John Sillett to bring Kevin’s scoring skills to Highfield Road in October 1989 for an £800k fee.

Though he scored on his debut against his home town club in a League Cup tie, Kevin found goals much harder to come by for the Sky Blues, failing to score in any of his fifteen league appearances in the 1990-91 season and finishing up with seven goals in his 54 Sky Blue appearances in all competitions.

After a short loan spell at near neighbours Birmingham City, in the autumn of 1991 Kevin again moved back to Scotland with Falkirk as player-coach. He also coached and managed Stirling Albion before managing Montrose Athletic in 1998. After hanging up his boots he became a football agent and also did media punditry.

Kevin has come back to Coventry for CCFPA reunions from time to time and has participated in our Golf Day reunions in the past too.

We hope he has a great day today and look forward to seeing him back in Coventry before too long.
