Charlton Athletic agree deals for duo – with medicals delay due to summer breaks

Charlton Athletic have agreed deals for Luke Berry and Josh Edwards with only medicals remaining before they wrap up moves to SE7.

Charlton have also triggered a release fee in the contract of Dunfermline’s Edwards, who can play a number of roles on the left including wing-back, left-sided centre-back and midfield.

The club have no intention of selling Thierry Small in this window. The former Southampton and Everton defender plays down the same side as Edwards and the plan is to have two quality options to play down the left flank.

Charlton have made their first addition of the window with Cambridge United goalkeeper Will Mannion signing a three-year contract.

Addicks manager Nathan Jones told the club’s official website: “We believe we’ve agreed with a few, so they should be announced in due course.

“But we try to keep everything in-house and quiet because all of the signings and all of the people we’re speaking to will have vast competition from higher leagues and a lot of the teams in our division.

“[We want] players who can do fantastically well this season for Charlton and hopefully help us to achieve our goal.

“What we don’t want to do is a big recruitment drive every year. We believe we’re going in a certain direction and those players we bring in now have to be able to not only do well for Charlton now, but be able to have the capacity to play at a higher level as well.”
