NEWS IN: Eagles DE Josh Sweat switches up his jersey number again

This is the second time Sweat has changed his number. He wore No. 75 during his rookie year in 2018 before switching to No. 94.

Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee, the original owner of No. 19, will now wear No. 16.

Fans on social media are not big fans of the change and want answers.

Could a Fresh Number Mean a Fresh Start for Sweat?

With the departure of sack leader Haason Reddick this offseason, the Eagles will be counting on Sweat in 2024.

The Eagles were hoping to see Sweat build onto his 2021 Pro Bowl year and 11 sacks in 2022 last fall, but instead, he took a step backward and finished the season with 6.5 sacks and 43 total tackles through 17 games.

After Sweat failed to live up to his previous standards, trade rumors circulated and the veteran edge even took to Instagram to say goodbye to Philly fans.

Three days later, the Eagles restructured Sweat’s contract.

His revamped deal doesn’t have him locked into Philly past the 2024 season, but it does give him more money and another year to prove himself.

Sweat, 26, was initially selected in the fourth round by the Eagles in the 2018 NFL Draft. He became a full-time starter for the Birds in 2021 where he earned his first Pro Bowl nod.

In six seasons, Sweat has totaled 196 tackles, 35 sacks, seven forced fumbles, nine pass deflections, and an interception returned for a touchdown.

Perhaps a new number is what is needed to spark new life into Sweat and get him back to his sack monster ways.

Anyway, we’ll see if that’s the case when No. 19 takes the field in Brazil in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers.
