Aston Villa receive massive boost to sign Mario Hermoso

Aston Villa should be looking to add more quality players to the squad after an impressive 2023-24 campaign under Unai Emery.

The Villans will play in the Champions League next season, and with that comes an extra pressure. Ask Newcastle United.

It is a tremendous achievement to get into the top four in a highly competitive league, but the real challenge is to maintain that position and become better. Villa’s first challenge will be to maintain the top-four position in the league and get into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League.

Put simply, quality signings are needed. Earlier this month, Mundo Deportivo reported that Villa are showing keen interest in signing Mario Hermoso from Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone loves Hermoso and considers him a key player for Rojiblancos, but his contract situation is proving to be a major headache. He has a contract until the end of June and could leave the La Liga club as a free agent.

Emery has personally contacted him to let him know that he is welcome at Villa Park. Hermoso can play as a centre-back or a left-back.

Since joining the club from Espanyol in 2019, he has been a regular member, making over 165 appearances. Ideally, Atletico would not want to lose him, but they have not been able to submit an offer that can persuade him to stay.

According to a fresh report from Mundo Deportivo, Atletico has not made enough effort to keep him at the club.

The newspaper suggests that no talks are currently taking place between Hermoso and Atletico, which means he is approaching the end of his contract. Since December, he has not heard anything from the club, while the offer presented to him is well below his expectations.

He needs to find a new club, and Villa must jump in quickly and get him on board. Given his quality and experience, he would be a fantastic addition to the Villa squad.
