Everton fan sneaks into Jurgen Klopp farewell at Liverpool local

An Everton supporter has played a joke on departing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp with a subtle message in a farewell card, according to the Daily Mail.

It has been reported that one Everton fan left a message in the card’s barcode which read ‘2-0’ – the score by which the Toffees beat their city rivals in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

That victory went some way towards derailing Liverpool’s Premier League title bid, consigning them to a third-placed finish as Everton lost to runners-up Arsenal on the final day of the season.

The report said that the card, written by those at his local, the Freshfield pub, was full of “heartfelt messages”, but that 2-0 hidden in the barcode was a clear nod to the Toffees’ win in Klopp’s final Merseyside derby.

Everton do their best to spoil Klopp’s Liverpool farewell

Everton have had many of their battles to fight in the Premier League this season, but that didn’t stop the Toffees from having a crucial say in the title race at the other end of the season.

Well before their final-day loss to Arsenal on May 19, which came in controversial circumstances, the Blues had already put paid to one side’s chances of claiming the Premier League crown – and fittingly for Everton, that side happened to be their biggest rivals, Liverpool.

The Toffees’ 2-0 win at Goodison Park on 24 April came amidst a raucous atmosphere, all but sealing the hosts’ safety while leaving Liverpool nine points off the top of the table.

Understandably, it’s a result which will live long in the memory for Everton fans, being the match which both confirmed a desirable result for the Toffees and made sure that Klopp’s final Merseyside derby – a fixture which his Reds sides have dominated since 2015 – ended on a sour note. As the season comes to an end with the two Merseyside clubs having hugely contrasting campaigns, Everton fans will still take solace in the fact that they had the last laugh in the penultimate derby at Goodison Park.
