Bears to Eye Eric Bieniemy as Potential New Head Coach, Per Report

The Chicago Bears’ hunt for a compelling change in leadership is taking a turn toward a high-profile name with proven credentials. According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports , Eric Bieniemy is a candidate the Bears are expected to have interest in if they decide to move on from current head coach Matt Eberflus.

The Bears have an abysmal record under Eberflus and struggle to display consistency in their overall game — a factor that could lead to changes on the sidelines. Team President Kevin Warren has several reasons to consider a new head coaching direction, and their connections to Bieniemy are notably intriguing.

Bieniemy, who currently serves as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator, has history with Poles. Their time with the Kansas City Chiefs included a Super Bowl win — a testament to the offensive prowess that Bieniemy could potentially bring to the Bears. Additionally, Warren’s tenure with the Minnesota Vikings overlapped with Bieniemy’s role as running backs coach. There wouldn’t be a lack of familiarity should Bieniemy land in Chicago.

Bieniemy’s time running the Chiefs’ offense featured notable quarterback success, including Patrick Mahomes’ two MVP seasons. In the wake of Bieniemy’s move to Washington, Mahomes’ performance has noticeably dipped while Commanders’ signal-caller Sam Howell soared to second in NFL passing stats under his guidance.

With the Bears weighing a potential QB shift in the 2024 NFL Draft against sticking with Justin Fields, leadership that can mold and elevate a young passer is paramount. Bieniemy’s reputation for developing quarterback talent makes him an ideal candidate for the Bears.
