An inquest is set to be held into the death of an unarmed Coventry man who was killed in 2019. Sean Fitzgerald was shot by a police officer as he left a house on Burnaby Road.

Mr Fitzgerald was fatally shot during the ‘planned operation’ on January 4, 2019. He died after receiving a single bullet wound to his chest on Burnaby Road at around 6.20pm.

Derrick Campbell, of the International Office for Police Conduct, said the 31-year-old had been shot by an officer from West Midlands Police. He was said to have been shot ‘as he emerged from the rear of the property as other officers were entering through the front.’

A pre-inquest hearing into the death of Mr Fitzgerald will be held on Friday, June 28. It will be heard by Sir John Saunders, a retired High Court Judge.

A number of police officers involved in the events of the case have made applications to be anonymised and to give evidence remotely or with screens, Coventry Coroners Office said. It is understood these applications as well as other case management matters will be considered at the hearing on June 28.
