Everton could land third points deduction as ‘real worry’ emerges – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted there is a “real worry” about a third Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach and subsequent points deduction.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – also claimed Evertonians are “concerned” about potential player sales needed to avoid breaching the rules a third time.
This season, Everton were deducted eight points for two separate PSR breaches in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns.
Accounts for the 2023-24 campaign must be submitted by 30 June and losses must not exceed £105million over a rolling three-year period for the club to avoid further punishment.
As such, Everton may need to sell key players to comply with the rules – with Jarrad Branthwaite, Amadou Onana and Jordan Pickford attracting interest in England and across Europe.
Wyness concerned about new points deduction with Everton ‘spiralling’
Wyness revealed his concern about the Merseyside club descending into a “spiral” of breaching PSR.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The fans are concerned about avoiding another points deduction under the PSR rules.
“We’ve already got the case coming for the stadium interest, so that’s definitely already on the slate.
“But if there’s a spiral where we have another PSR charge next year, that’s the real worry.
“At the same time – who are we going to sell to remove that threat?
“There is concern about who the two or three players are who need to be sold this summer.”
