Braves 7, Cubs 0: Can’t win if you can’t score runs

They got both, as Javier Assad threw six more shutout innings and the offense generated 13 hits, including home runs from Mike Tauchman and Seiya Suzuki, and the Cubs took the series finale from the Braves in convincing fashion, 7-1. 44 games into the 2024 season, the Cubs still have not lost more than two in a row.

Usually, Tauchman is working long at-bats and drawing walks, but that works too, a really nice piece of oppo hitting.

The Cubs were not done in the first inning against Charlie Morton. Seiya Suzuki followed with a double and Cody Bellinger singled him to third.

The Cubs last night ended their 92nd multi-game scoreless streak since 1901. It was the 29th that they ended by scoring in the first inning, but Mike Tauchman became just the third Cub to homer leading off the game — and the first to do it on the road.

The first was Dee Fondy, who, like Tauchman, homered on the first pitch, at home against the Dodgers on Sept. 9, 1955. Later in the inning, Ernie Banks and Eddie Miksis hit 2-run homers. The Cubs won, 11-4. They had been shut out in their two previous games, 1-0 by the Braves and 2-0 by the Pirates.

The second was Lou Brock, against the Cardinals, in the Cubs’ home opener on April 13, 1962. The pitch count is unknown. The Cubs lost, 8-5, in 15 innings. They had been blanked in their two previous games at Houston, both by 2-0, as the Colt .45s swept the first three games in their history.

Andre Dawson hit a three-run homer in the first inning at Cincinnati to end a four-game streak in 1992. Charlie Dexter homered with two outs in the first to snap a two-game streak in 1902.
