Warriors’ Curry has wild college feat duplicated by Memphis’ David Jones

According to OptaSTATS, superstar point guard Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors has joined an incredibly restricted NCAA basketball statistics club. Two Division I players have defeated an AP Top 25 team on the road or at a neutral venue with 35 points or more and five steals or more in the past 25 years. Stephen Curry vs Gonzaga in the 2008 NCAA Tournament was one of them. David Jones for @Memphis_MBB was the other today.

Warriors’ Stephen Curry was a beast back in college

During his playing days in college, Curry was busy making Davidson Wildcats opponents look stupid by guarding against him, long before he became an NBA hero and Warrior legend. One of the many memorable games he played in during his time with the Wildcats was against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the 2008 March Madness first round. David Jones recently matched that performance on Thursday during Memphis basketball’s thrilling 84-79 upset victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis.

With 36 points on 10-for-14 field goal shooting, including four 3-pointers, and 12-for-14 foul shooting, Jones put the Tigers on his back and guided them to victory. In 33 minutes of play, he also contributed four rebounds, two assists, and five steals. Like Curry often does for the Warriors, he was extremely effective offensively and a dangerous player on defense against the Razorbacks.

For the record, in the previously mentioned upset victory over the Bulldogs more than fifteen years ago, Curry erupted for forty points on 14-for-22 shooting from the field with six 3-pointers, three rebounds, two assists, and five steals.
