There was plenty of speculation around the New York Giants leading to the NFL Draft.

Several reports suggested that they were done with QB Daniel Jones, and judging by his history of underperforming and injuries, it was easy to believe they had second thoughts after giving him that contract.

Nonetheless, GM Joe Schoen took the ‘safer’ route in the draft, and some might even say the right one, by not trading up or reaching to get a quarterback and using their No. 6 pick to get the best available player.

Now, the Giants’ GM has confirmed that Daniel Jones will be their starter come day one, with new backup Drew Lock as QB2, at least for the time being (Via ProFootballTalk):

“Yeah, for me, I said it in January after the season,” Schoen said. “Our expectation was Daniel would be our starter and we brought Drew Lock to be his backup and Tommy is a backup, so that’s where we are and that’s how we’ll move forward this season. Daniel is still under contract for three more years. As it sits today, that’s where we are.”

The Giants had no skill players, and they needed someone to build their offense around, which is why Malik Nabers was a perfect first-round selection for them.

Whether Jones is the right guy to lead them going forward seems unlikely, but it still made more sense to hold onto him for another season and then go in a different direction when they can move on from his contract, either in free agency or in the draft.

Also, there’s still always a chance that Jones can bounce back and have another somewhat decent season like the one he had in Brian Daboll’s first year with the organization.
